This artwork:
Calling the directions refers to the shamanic practice of opening a ceremony space by invoking the protection of the four cardinal directions, above, below, and center. Each culture that uses this practice has slightly different variations, but the core meaning remains that you call to the spirits, guides, and guardians of your surroundings to hold a container of safety around the ceremony you are participating in. In my practice, calling the directions before psychedelics is mandatory to help establish its use as spiritually medicinal, protected, respectful, hygienic, and promote connection to core healing symbols.
